Profile and route analysis
Another very long 125 km stage, a first for this junior event, joining Nantua (Haut Bugey Agglo) to Belley (communauté de communes Bugey Sud), will be a challenge for the young riders, often used to distances closer to 100 km.
And the 25 Km on the final stretch is likely to "change the game". It's not certain that it will be a pure climber who wins on July 14th in Hauteville. All the more so as the following day's time trial is likely to confirm a strong rider "perfectly prepared physically". So the stage will start from Lac de Nantua on a 9.5 km neutralized course, with a high percentage right from the start. Even if they climb it at a moderate pace, with recovery and a standing start, these kilometers will count towards the finish in Belley. Right from the start, they'll have to climb the Col de Belleroche, even if it's very rolling, but the 6.5 km ascent will leave its mark on their bodies. The riders won't have time to recover on the downhill sections. The juniors, with their limited gear ratios, will have to turn their legs and, as we say in cycling jargon, "have them around their necks".
Then it's on to the cols de Pisseloup, la Berche, Hauteville and Thézillieu, always interspersed with false flats, followed by a highly technical descent to Virieu le Grand (a little more than halfway). At PK 73.1 there will still be ..... 66.1 km of very rough terrain, a succession of molehills to climb and descend, with no opportunity to recover. The race passes through Belley for the first time to contest the 3rd SPRINT. But at PK 103.5, the famous bump of the Route des Combes, classified as 2nd category (even though it's not very long), will finish off the 23 km remaining. Especially as we'll be crossing the line again in Belley for the final SPRINT at PK 117.3. The last lap of 7.6 km (before the finish), with the côte de l'hôpital (hospital climb), will see a maximum of 5 riders battle it out for the finish.
A great spectacle in store!
